ICLASS
June 2000
Teacher of the Year procedure
Modified November 2001
- SELECTION COMMITTEE:
At the yearly meeting of ICLASS the vice-president will appoint a
three-person Teacher of the Year selection committee. When possible, one of the three will be
a winner of one of the previous year’s awards. Members should represent the two levels
of award: elementary and
secondary. The committee sets
timely deadlines, recruits nominations, receives and reviews nomination
materials, and determines the recipients:
one at the elementary level, one at the secondary level. The committee may then recommend that
ICLASS submit a nominee for IFLTA Teacher of the Year if a candidate is
qualified. The committee may also
recommend that no Teachers of the Year be selected in any given year if
conditions warrant.
- LEVELS OF NOMINATION:
Teachers who are members of ICLASS may be nominated for Teacher of
the Year in only one of the two divisions:
elementary and secondary.
Teachers who share duties or responsibilities on more than one
level may be nominated for their work on one level only in any nomination
cycle.
- WHO MAY NOMINATE:
Colleagues, co-workers, administrators, or parents may submit names
of qualified teachers for nomination.
Nominators are not required to have membership in ICLASS. The selection committee will provide
each nominee with a nomination form and instructions.
- NOMINATION FORMAT:
Nominations must cite two points of excellence from the following
list: academic contribution,
program development, service to organization or community, professional
contribution, teaching excellence, or personal achievement. Support materials for each cited point
of excellence must accompany the nomination. Details and examples can appear on the
nomination form.
- IFLTA QUALIFICATION:
If an ICLASS Teacher of the Year recipient qualifies for IFLTA
Teacher of the Year, then the selection committee and the qualified
teacher(s) will complete and submit the IFLTA nomination packet.
- RECOGNITION: ICLASS will formally honor the ICLASS
Teachers of the Year at the yearly meeting in the fall. The committee will also send notice to
the local newspapers.
